Ghana, Burkina Faso explore deeper petroleum trade cooperation

by Business Post

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to expanding petroleum trade with Burkina Faso, with a focus on increasing the supply and transportation of refined petroleum products to the landlocked neighbouring country.

The Chief Executive of the NPA, Mr Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Esq., made this known when the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Burkina Faso’s Société Nationale Burkinabè d’Hydrocarbures (SONABHY), Mr Forogo Patrice, paid a courtesy call on him.

The visit provided an opportunity for the two officials to reaffirm the longstanding bilateral relationship between Ghana and Burkina Faso in the petroleum sector and explore opportunities to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit.

Welcoming the delegation, Mr Tameklo said Ghana was keen to deepen its role as a supplier and transit point for petroleum products to Burkina Faso, noting the considerable opportunities available to both countries through increased trade.

He emphasised the potential for expanding bilateral petroleum commerce, particularly through the movement and trading of refined petroleum products, which could strengthen commercial ties and support regional energy cooperation.

Mr Tameklo’s remarks underscored the NPA’s interest in leveraging Ghana’s petroleum infrastructure and trading relationships to facilitate the supply of products to neighbouring markets.

On his part, Mr Patrice expressed appreciation to Ghana for its continued partnership and support, highlighting the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in petroleum financing and trade.

He said closer cooperation between the two institutions would be beneficial to both countries as they seek to enhance collaboration in the petroleum industry.

The engagement reflects the importance of cross-border petroleum trade to Burkina Faso, which relies on supply routes through neighbouring countries to meet its fuel requirements.

It also highlights the potential for stronger cooperation between petroleum sector institutions in West Africa to improve trade flows and deepen regional economic integration.

The NPA said the visit reinforced its commitment to fostering bilateral and regional partnerships, promoting petroleum trade and strengthening collaboration among industry institutions across the West African sub-region.

The discussions are expected to provide a basis for further engagement between Ghana and Burkina Faso on opportunities to expand petroleum product trade and cooperation.

However, no specific agreements, financing arrangements or implementation timelines were announced following the courtesy call.
