The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted and seized more than half a tonne of suspected cannabis at Torve, near Akatsi in the Volta Region, in what officials describe as a major blow to illicit drug trafficking operations.

The seizure was carried out by the Preventive Monitoring Unit (PMU) of the Aflao Sector Command on the night of October 15, 2026, following intelligence reports regarding a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal substances.

According to Customs, officers tracked a black Lexus vehicle believed to be conveying narcotic drugs. The driver reportedly attempted to evade arrest but abandoned the vehicle after it developed a mechanical fault, enabling officers to secure and inspect it.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 1,065 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis weighing a total of 560.4 kilogrammes. Authorities estimate the street value of the consignment at approximately GH¢11.2 million.

Investigators also retrieved a Ghana Card bearing the name Kunuhor Gidsway from the vehicle. Customs indicated that the vehicle was fitted with falsified registration plates, raising further suspicions about the operation.

The seized substances were jointly examined and authenticated by representatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and National Security.

Customs said the narcotics and the vehicle have been properly documented and secured pending laboratory analysis and evidential processing. The consignment has since been handed over to NACOC to support ongoing investigations.

Officials have recommended a number of follow-up actions, including efforts to trace and apprehend the suspect who fled the scene, verification of the recovered Ghana Card with the National Identification Authority (NIA), and laboratory testing of the seized substances to confirm their composition.

They also stressed the need to strengthen intelligence-sharing networks and surveillance operations to prevent similar trafficking attempts along Ghana’s borders.

Sector Commander for Aflao Collection, Emmanuel Reginald Duh, described the operation as a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade in the region.

He reaffirmed the Customs Division’s commitment to protecting the country’s borders and collaborating with partner security agencies to combat the movement of contraband and other illicit goods.
