Serene Insurance Limited, a member of First Sky Group, has renovated the fifth floor of the Surgical Department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to improve patient comfort, privacy and healthcare delivery.

The facility was officially handed over to the hospital on Friday, October 16, 2026, as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility commitment to supporting public healthcare institutions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of Serene Insurance Limited, Mrs Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong, said the project followed a visit to the Surgical Block in December 2025, when challenges affecting patients were brought to the company’s attention.

The renovation included refurbishment and tiling of wards, renovation of three side-ward washrooms, painting, provision of reception furniture, refurbishment of the nurses’ station, pantry and doctors’ offices, and installation of curtains to enhance patient privacy.

Mrs Boampong highlighted other interventions by the company, including the provision of 55 complete hospital bed sets and donations of assorted items valued at GH¢100,000 to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital under a quarterly support programme introduced in December 2023.

At the event, Executive Chairman and Founder of First Sky Group, Mr Eric Seddy Kutortse, announced that the Group would fully fund kidney transplant procedures for eligible renal patients receiving treatment at Korle Bu.

He said applications would be channelled through the hospital’s Renal Unit for medical assessments, due diligence and ethical reviews before funding decisions were made.

Mr Kutortse explained that the initiative would build on the Group’s longstanding support for renal patients through its free dialysis programme. With the introduction of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, the Group intends to focus its support on kidney transplantation.

He also reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to supporting efforts to establish a legal and regulatory framework for organ donation and transplantation in Ghana.

Receiving the facility, KBTH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, commended First Sky Group and Serene Insurance for their sustained support.

He recalled that the Group’s assistance to the hospital’s renal services began in 2016 with a donation exceeding GH¢2 million and a pickup vehicle, followed by quarterly financial support of approximately GH¢1 million.

The Head of the Surgical Department, Dr Patrick Bankah, said the department served more than 50,000 patients annually, adding that the renovated facility would improve patient experience and the working environment for healthcare professionals.
