Africans Communicating Africa (AfriComms Africa), a new pan-African foundation focused on promoting authentic African storytelling, will officially launch in Accra on May 26, coinciding with Africa Day celebrations.
The event is expected to bring together thought leaders, communication professionals, and creatives from across the continent to explore how Africa is positioned globally—and how Africans can take greater ownership of their narratives in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
The launch will feature discussions spanning key areas such as sustainability and climate communication, political communication, corporate communication, and diplomacy. Participants will also examine the growing influence of youth-led digital storytelling in shaping Africa’s image and voice on the global stage.
Organisers say the initiative aims to build a stronger ecosystem for African communicators to collaborate, exchange ideas, and redefine how the continent is perceived internationally.
Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, a Communications for Development Advocate, described the summit as a platform for “bold dialogue, diverse perspectives, and meaningful collaboration.”
“Africa has never lacked communicators,” she noted.
“What Africa needs are alternative, rich spaces where professionals can come together to challenge perspectives, inspire new thinking, and collectively shape stronger, more authentic narratives for the world.”
Also speaking ahead of the launch, playwright and international storyteller Nii Commey emphasized the urgency of Africans taking control of their own stories.
“The time for Africans to own and tell their own stories is now,” he said.
“If we do not define ourselves and communicate our realities with confidence and authenticity, others will continue to do it for us.”
The event will convene journalists, diplomats, corporate leaders, storytellers, and creatives for dialogue on representation and strategic communication. It marks the beginning of what organisers describe as a broader movement to strengthen Africa’s narrative power.
AfriComms Africa is inviting communicators, media professionals, institutions, and creatives who believe in authentic African storytelling to join the initiative and contribute to shaping the continent’s narrative globally.
