Ninety-five social impact projects to be driven by over 4500 GCB staff

by Business Post

Improving access to essential services, creating better learning environments, strengthening healthcare delivery and addressing community needs are among the outcomes GCB Bank seeks to achieve through its Staff Community Impact Program (SCIP), a nationwide employee-led initiative being implemented across Ghana.

More than 4,000 GCB employees are being mobilised through 95 staff groups to support community development initiatives across the country. Each group comprises about 50 employees who contribute their time, ideas, resources and expertise to projects designed to create meaningful impact.

The projects cover education, healthcare, water and sanitation, environmental sustainability, youth development, social welfare, community safety and infrastructure. Each staff group identifies a community need and works towards a practical intervention.

The programme is founded on the belief that employees who live and work in communities are often best placed to understand the challenges facing them. SCIP gives staff an opportunity to contribute directly to improving the wellbeing and prospects of communities across Ghana.

From Classrooms to Healthcare Facilities

SCIP interventions are focused on creating tangible improvements in people’s everyday lives.

In education, projects include classroom renovations, provision of desks and furniture, ICT and digital learning facilities, library and e-learning support, and interventions for special schools. These seek to create safer and more conducive learning environments while improving access to educational resources.

Healthcare interventions include medical equipment, refurbishment of hospital wards and consulting rooms, support for maternity and neonatal care, hospital beds, facility improvements and health education activities, aimed at improving healthcare delivery.

Water and sanitation projects seek to improve access to safe water, sanitation facilities and healthier community environments. These include mechanised boreholes for communities, schools, healthcare facilities and correctional institutions, as well as improved washroom facilities.

Other interventions focus on environmental protection, fire and flood prevention, youth mentorship, support for vulnerable groups, community health and wellness, correctional facilities and community beautification.

The programme also includes targeted interventions for vulnerable groups, including the Mampong-Akuapem School for the Deaf, Cape Coast School for the Deaf, Village of Hope, juvenile offenders at the Senior Correctional Centre, and patients and children requiring specialised healthcare.

Collectively, the projects are expected to contribute to better access to essential services, improved health and wellbeing, safer and more inclusive spaces, stronger educational outcomes and greater opportunities for young people.

Commenting on the initiative, Managing Director of GCB Bank, Farihan Alhassan, said SCIP reflects the Bank’s commitment to creating value in the communities it serves.

“At GCB, we believe our responsibility to the communities we serve goes beyond providing banking services. Our people are part of these communities, and they understand many of the challenges that families, institutions and businesses face every day. SCIP gives our staff the opportunity to turn that understanding into action by supporting practical interventions that can improve lives. The strength of the programme lies in its people-led approach and in the collective commitment of our staff to contribute to the development of communities across Ghana.”

Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer, GCB Bank, Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo

Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer, Cynthia Ofori-Dwumfuo, said the breadth of the projects demonstrates the commitment of GCB staff to making a difference.

“SCIP brings together the passion, ideas and commitment of our people to create meaningful community impact. The projects may differ from one community to another because the needs are different, but they are united by one purpose: to contribute to improving people’s lives. From a child gaining access to a better learning environment, to a patient receiving care in an improved facility, or a community gaining access to safe water, these interventions are about creating opportunities for people to thrive.”

The programme also provides an opportunity for GCB staff to strengthen relationships with communities, local institutions, traditional authorities and other stakeholders while promoting volunteerism, teamwork, ownership and social responsibility.

SCIP complements GCB Bank’s broader commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and national development by empowering staff to identify community needs and participate directly in addressing them.

As implementation progresses, GCB Bank will share stories and content from SCIP projects across the country, highlighting the interventions, the staff groups behind them, the communities benefiting from them and the impact they seek to create.

The Staff Community Impact Program is anchored on a simple belief: when our people come together with communities to address real needs, we can create meaningful impact that extends beyond banking.
