EBID secures Moody’s rating upgrade, bolstering path to investment grade

by Business Post

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has received a significant credit rating upgrade from Moody’s Ratings, a development expected to strengthen investor confidence in the regional development finance institution and enhance its access to international capital markets.

Moody’s upgraded EBID’s long-term issuer rating to B1 from B2 and assigned a stable outlook, citing improvements in the bank’s financial position, asset quality and funding structure.

The rating action, published on August 14, 2026, reflects what Moody’s described as EBID’s sound solvency position, moderate capitalisation and resilient asset quality despite an expansion of its lending activities across West Africa.

The agency also pointed to the bank’s efforts to diversify funding sources and maintain robust shareholder backing through continued paid-in capital contributions and strategic partnerships.

The latest upgrade marks another milestone in EBID’s ongoing efforts to attain investment-grade status, a move that could lower borrowing costs and improve the institution’s ability to mobilise resources for development projects across the ECOWAS sub-region.

A major catalyst for the improved rating was the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) entry into EBID as its first institutional shareholder.

The partnership, approved in June 2026, is expected to strengthen the bank’s capital base, governance framework and overall market credibility.

Commenting on the development, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EBID, Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, said the upgrade demonstrates growing confidence in the institution’s financial management and strategic direction.

“This upgrade is a clear recognition of the progress EBID has made in strengthening its financial foundation and institutional capacity. It validates the confidence that our shareholders, partners and the international community have placed in us,” he said.

Dr. Donkor added that the bank is proving that a regional development finance institution can combine ambition with resilience while supporting West Africa’s economic transformation agenda.

The rating upgrade comes as EBID implements its Growth, Resilience and Optimisation (GRO) Strategy 2026-2030, a five-year framework focused on infrastructure development, renewable energy financing, private sector growth and climate resilience.

Under the strategy, the bank has accelerated investments in key sectors including infrastructure, healthcare and energy.

These initiatives are aimed at expanding electricity access, creating employment opportunities and supporting sustainable economic development across member states.

Headquartered in Lomé, Togo, EBID serves as the development finance institution of the fifteen ECOWAS member countries. The bank finances projects through public and private sector windows, offering loans, equity participation, lines of credit, refinancing and other financial services designed to advance regional development.

Analysts say the Moody’s upgrade reinforces EBID’s growing role as a key financier of development priorities in West Africa and could improve its ability to attract both institutional investors and international development partners in the years ahead.
