by Business Post

Ghana’s fundraising campaign in support of the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has received a significant boost, following fresh financial commitments from key state institutions and corporate entities as preparations intensify ahead of the tournament slated for June.

Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, disclosed that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has contributed GH¢5 million towards the initiative. In addition, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has injected US$300,000 into the committee’s designated foreign currency account to support logistics and preparations.

The private sector has also stepped up its involvement. Timeline and Innovation Company Ltd increased its contribution by an additional GH¢1 million, bringing its total financial backing to GH¢2 million. Meanwhile, SIC Insurance Company Limited has joined the campaign with a GH¢1 million donation, signalling growing corporate confidence in the fundraising effort.

Mr Ampem noted that the fundraising committee is working against time, with approximately two weeks remaining to conclude the mobilisation drive. He explained that all funds raised would subsequently be handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for disbursement and utilisation in support of the national team.

To enhance efficiency and attract contributions from both local and international donors, the committee has established multiple bank accounts at the central bank, covering major currencies including the Ghana cedi, US dollar, euro and pound sterling.

Managing Director of SIC Insurance, Solomon Twum Barimah, underscored the company’s commitment to national development and sports promotion, indicating that the insurer’s contribution aligns with its broader corporate social responsibility objectives.

“It is only proper and right that we support the team to ensure they represent Ghana well on the global stage,” he said.

Mr Barimah further revealed that SIC Insurance is developing additional life insurance packages for the Black Stars contingent, aimed at providing financial protection and reassurance to players and officials during the tournament.

The latest contributions are expected to bolster Ghana’s preparations as the nation seeks a strong showing at the 2026 World Cup, with government and private stakeholders increasingly aligning efforts to support the national team.
