GRA bolsters Black Stars World Cup fundraising with US$300k support

by Business Post

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has emerged as a key contributor to the ongoing fundraising drive in support of the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, providing a significant foreign currency boost to the campaign.

Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, disclosed that the revenue collection agency has transferred US$300,000 into the committee’s designated dollar account, reinforcing efforts to mobilise resources ahead of the tournament in June. The GRA’s contribution is expected to play a critical role in meeting foreign exchange requirements for the team’s preparations.

The latest support from the Authority comes as the fundraising committee intensifies efforts to conclude the exercise within the next two weeks. Mr Ampem indicated that all proceeds would subsequently be handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for utilisation.

While highlighting the GRA’s contribution as a major milestone, Mr Ampem also noted additional backing from other institutions. The Bank of Ghana has committed GH¢5 million, while private sector participation continues to grow. Timeline and Innovation Company Ltd increased its total contribution to GH¢2 million after an additional GH¢1 million donation, and SIC Insurance Company Limited joined the campaign with GH¢1 million.

To facilitate seamless participation from both domestic and international donors, the committee has opened multiple accounts at the central bank in cedi, US dollar, euro and pound sterling, a move aimed at attracting diversified funding streams.

The GRA’s involvement underscores the role of state institutions in supporting national initiatives, particularly those tied to sports and national pride. Its dollar-denominated contribution is especially significant given the foreign exchange demands associated with international tournaments.

Managing Director of SIC Insurance, Solomon Twum Barimah, said the growing support from institutions reflects confidence in the team’s ability to deliver on the global stage.

“It is only proper and right that we support them so that they can go and make Ghana proud,” he said, noting that the insurer is also developing additional life insurance packages for players and officials.

With momentum building, the GRA’s intervention is expected to encourage further contributions, as the country rallies support for the Black Stars in their quest for a strong performance at the 2026 World Cup.
