South African businessman Patrice Motsepe has been elected the new President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He was elected by popular acclamation on Friday, March 12 at the 43rd Ordinary and Elective General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco as he was the sole candidate for the top job on the African continent.
He replaces Dr Ahmad Ahmad, who was in 2020 handed a 5-year ban by the sport’s world governing body. This was recently reduced to two years.
Motsepe owns Mamelodi Sundowns and since making his intentions known to contest the CAF presidency has received massive support.
They all threw their support behind the mining magnate.
Motsepe, 58, is expected to bring on board his business acumen to make the sport lucrative on the continent.
President of the South African Football Association Danny Jordaan has already praised “his business acumen, knowledge of governance and global business”.
He will be the first English-speaking President of the Confederation.
