Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has appealed to the private sector to play a more active role in improving environmental sanitation by supporting community-led clean-up initiatives across the country.
He said businesses can complement government efforts by providing logistics, equipment and other resources to youth groups and volunteer organisations spearheading sanitation activities in their communities.
Mr. Sarpong made the appeal after joining GRA staff in the National Sanitation Day exercise, where they cleaned sections of Osu, the Ministries enclave and adjoining areas in Accra.
He stressed that maintaining clean communities should not be the sole responsibility of government, urging individuals, corporate organisations and philanthropists to collectively sustain the national clean-up campaign.
“Everyone has a role to play in keeping our environment clean. Businesses, individuals and philanthropists should support groups undertaking clean-up exercises in their localities to ensure the initiative is sustained,” he said.
The GRA Commissioner-General also encouraged staff of the Authority to uphold high standards of cleanliness within their workplaces, noting that clean and healthy office environments contribute to improved productivity and service delivery.
The National Sanitation Day exercise forms part of government’s broader strategy to improve environmental sanitation, prevent indiscriminate waste disposal and reduce flooding by clearing drains and other public spaces across the country.
