The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced plans to tighten registration requirements for petroleum tanker owners and drivers seeking to operate in Ghana.
The move, according to According NPA’s Chief Executive Officer, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo Esq, is intended to strengthen safety standards and reduce the rising number of road accidents involving petroleum tankers.
Speaking at the Safety Week celebration organised by the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies on Tuesday, April 7, Mr Tameklo said the new measures will ensure that only tankers that meet strict safety and operational criteria are allowed on the country’s roads.
He emphasised that responsibility for safety rests with all stakeholders in the sector, including tanker owners, drivers, unions, and the regulator.
“The business owner who is buying the tanker has a responsibility, the one driving also has a responsibility, the union, and of course, the National Petroleum Authority.
“Going forward, before we register any new tanker, there are KPI or checklists that we will look at before registration,” he said.
