Employees of GCB Bank PLC’s Operations Department have refurbished and equipped the ICT Centre at Presby Basic School in Adjen Kotoku, within the Ga West Municipal Assembly, to enhance digital learning and improve access to technology for pupils and neighbouring schools.
The intervention forms part of GCB Bank’s Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP), an employee-led corporate social responsibility initiative through which more than 4,500 employees, working in 95 teams, are implementing 95 community projects across Ghana. The programme addresses practical community needs and aims to positively impact up to one million Ghanaians through interventions in education, health and wellbeing, youth development, sanitation, environmental sustainability and other areas of community development.
The project was undertaken by Operations Department Group Two following community engagement and a request from the school’s Headmistress. The team identified significant gaps in the school’s ICT infrastructure, including the absence of computers and deteriorating furniture in the ICT Centre. These challenges limited pupils’ opportunities for practical ICT learning and the development of essential digital skills.
To address these needs, the team refurbished the ICT Centre by repainting the facility, upgrading furniture and providing computers to support teaching and learning. The improved centre is expected to benefit pupils of Presby Basic School as well as learners from neighbouring schools that may access the facility, reaching an estimated 5,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries.
Speaking on the significance of SCIP, Sadat Laminu, Head of Corporate Affairs at GCB Bank, said the programme reflects the Bank’s commitment to empowering employees to contribute meaningfully to community development.
“What makes SCIP particularly meaningful is the ownership employees have taken of the programme. They are identifying needs, working with community stakeholders and helping shape solutions themselves. That involvement allows us to respond to local priorities in ways that are practical and relevant.” He added.
For the Operations team, the project represented an opportunity to strengthen educational outcomes by improving access to digital learning tools. Dominic Cobbinah, Head of Operations and a member of the project team, said the team recognised that digital literacy is becoming increasingly important in today’s learning environment.
“Access to ICT resources is essential for preparing young people for the future. Beyond providing computers, we wanted to create a learning environment where pupils can develop practical digital skills, build confidence in using technology and gain exposure to tools that will support their education and future opportunities.”
School management and education authorities expressed appreciation to GCB Bank and the employee volunteers for the support, noting that the upgraded facility and access to computers would significantly enhance ICT teaching and learning. They also indicated that the intervention would create opportunities for pupils from neighbouring schools to benefit from the facility.
To sustain the impact of the project, the team will work with school management and the District Education Directorate to promote the security, proper use and maintenance of the facility and its equipment. These measures are expected to help preserve the investment and ensure the ICT Centre continues to serve learners for years to come.
The Presby Basic School ICT Centre Project is the 25th of 95 SCIP projects being implemented by GCB Bank employees across Ghana, reflecting the Bank’s commitment to supporting education, youth development and sustainable community impact.
