The Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development has commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for its role in regulating Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry and contributing to the country’s economic growth.
The commendation was made during a working visit by members of the committee to the Authority’s headquarters, where they met with the Chief Executive of the NPA, Mr Godwin Kudzo Tameklo Esq, and the executive management team to gain first-hand insight into the Authority’s operations, regulatory mandate and ongoing reforms.
Chairperson of the committee, Mr Eric Afful, said the visit formed part of Parliament’s oversight responsibility and was intended to follow up on previous engagements with the Authority while verifying information on its operations.
He emphasised that the committee’s objective was to collaborate with the NPA rather than police its activities, describing the Authority as a critical institution whose work keeps Ghana’s economy functioning efficiently.
“The NPA plays a vital role in sustaining economic activity and makes a significant contribution to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). We are here to collaborate with the Authority and better appreciate the important work it is doing,” he said.
Mr Afful praised the Authority for its contribution to national development and encouraged it to continue strengthening regulatory standards within the downstream petroleum sector.
Welcoming the committee, Mr Tameklo expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of Parliament’s commitment to supporting the development of the downstream petroleum industry.
He said the engagement provided an opportunity for the Authority to account for its activities and showcase the progress it has made in strengthening regulation of the sector.
“Today, the Authority is honoured to receive members of this august committee of Parliament. I have always maintained that the work of Members of Parliament is not a joke, and so today we have opened our doors for verification, so it does not become only the CEO’s words,” he stated.
Mr Tameklo reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to ensuring a safe, efficient and resilient downstream petroleum industry through effective regulation and continuous institutional reforms.
He added that the Authority remained focused on protecting consumers, ensuring compliance with industry standards and promoting the sustainable growth of Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector.
As part of the visit, members of the Parliamentary Committee toured key operational facilities within the Authority, where officials demonstrated the functions of the NPA’s technical departments and the digital systems that support its regulatory and monitoring activities.
The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between Parliament and regulatory institutions in advancing transparency, accountability and efficiency in the management of Ghana’s energy sector.
