MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MoMo) has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at accelerating the digitisation of transport payments and supporting financial inclusion among commercial drivers.
The initiative, dubbed Ride with MoMo, is being implemented in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) through the GhQR platform, with the objective of helping drivers transition from cash-based transactions to more secure, traceable and formal digital payment systems.
The campaign was launched in Accra before moving to Ho in the Volta Region, bringing together ride-hailing drivers, Pragya operators, transport unions, regulators and financial sector stakeholders. Participants included representatives from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the National Communications Authority (NCA) and financial institutions.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD, Shaibu Haruna, said the programme seeks to address challenges associated with cash handling while enabling drivers to build more organised businesses.
According to him, the initiative goes beyond convenience and is designed to help transport operators establish proper financial records that could improve access to future financial services.
“Ride with MoMo is more than convenience. It is about helping drivers separate personal and business income, keep proper records, and build a transaction history that can support future access to financial services,” Mr. Haruna said.
He explained that the campaign will onboard ride-hailing, haulage and Pragya drivers onto the MoMo Merchant network, providing them with a formal payment channel that allows passengers to pay using GhQR-enabled applications, including the MoMo App.
Under the system, passengers can scan a QR code to make payments directly to a driver’s merchant wallet, ensuring instant receipt of fares and reducing the risks associated with carrying cash.
“When passengers pay by scanning a QR code, drivers receive the exact fare instantly. It reduces cash risks, removes the challenge of change and makes daily transactions simpler for both drivers and passengers,” he added. Chief Business Officer of GhIPSS, Akosua Blay, said the partnership demonstrates the importance of collaboration in extending digital payment infrastructure to Ghana’s informal sector.
She noted that GhQR provides a single payment acceptance platform through which merchants can receive payments from bank accounts, mobile money wallets and fintech wallets. “GhQR gives drivers one simple code through which they can receive payments from bank accounts, mobile money wallets and fintech wallets. This is how we make digital payments practical, inclusive and accessible for small businesses across the country,” Madam Blay said.
She added that the initiative would support efforts to formalise small businesses and deepen Ghana’s transition towards an inclusive digital economy. Commercial drivers welcomed the intervention, citing its potential to improve safety and operational efficiency.
A representative of ride-hailing drivers in Accra said the adoption of merchant wallets would help drivers reduce cash handling and improve record-keeping. “Receiving fares directly into a merchant wallet helps us reduce cash handling, avoid disputes over change and keep better records of our daily sales,” he said.
In Ho, where the campaign is targeting Pragya riders and other commercial transport operators, drivers said the solution responds to changing customer preferences for digital payments.
A representative of the riders noted that many passengers increasingly rely on electronic payment channels rather than cash.
“Many passengers do not always carry cash. With GhQR, they can pay easily, and we can also keep better track of our business,” he said.
The Ride with MoMo campaign forms part of MobileMoney Fintech LTD’s broader strategy to promote financial inclusion, enhance payment security and support the formalisation of businesses operating within Ghana’s transport sector.
MobileMoney Fintech LTD, which launched its mobile financial services in 2009, currently serves more than 17 million registered subscribers and offers a range of services, including payments, remittances, BankTech, InsurTech, savings and loans products.
