Passengers travelling through Accra’s International Airport will soon enjoy faster and more convenient security screening following the installation of advanced screening technology at Terminals 2 and 3.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced that the new equipment will eliminate several long-standing security screening requirements, allowing passengers to keep their laptops, shoes and belts on during routine screening while improving the efficiency of passenger processing.
According to the airport operator, the upgraded system is aimed at enhancing aviation security while significantly improving the travel experience.
Under the new screening process, passengers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their carry-on baggage before screening. The devices can now remain inside cabin bags as they pass through security scanners.
Similarly, travellers will generally be allowed to keep their shoes and belts on while passing through security checkpoints unless additional screening is required based on security profiling.
The new technology also allows Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) to remain inside cabin baggage during screening, removing the need for passengers to present them separately.
However, GACL emphasised that existing aviation security regulations governing liquids remain unchanged. Passengers are still required to comply with the maximum allowance of **100 millilitres per container** for liquids carried in hand luggage.
Faster passenger processing
As part of the upgrade, the airport has also introduced an **Automatic Tray Return System**, which automatically recirculates security trays, reducing waiting times and enabling passengers to repack their belongings more quickly after screening.
The new equipment is expected to improve passenger flow through security checkpoints while reducing congestion during peak travel periods.
Phased implementation
The Ghana Airports Company Limited said the rollout of the new screening technology will be implemented in phases.
During the transition period, the new equipment will operate alongside the existing screening systems until full migration is completed.
The company appealed to passengers and other airport users to cooperate with security personnel as the new procedures are introduced.
“Ghana Airports Company Limited kindly requests the cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders as we commence operations with the new equipment in the coming days,” the company said in a public notice.
The deployment of the advanced screening technology aligns Accra’s International Airport with evolving global aviation security standards that increasingly rely on sophisticated imaging systems to enhance security while making passenger screening more efficient and less intrusive.
