The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has assured fisherfolks in Dambai that construction of a modern fish market for the area will commence within the next two months.

The announcement was made during the Minister’s working visit to Dambai as part of her ongoing nationwide inland fisheries tour aimed at engaging stakeholders and addressing challenges within the sector.

Following discussions with inland fishers and fish processors, the Minister and her team visited the proposed site earmarked for construction of the fish market, a project expected to improve fish handling, storage, hygiene, and trading activities in the area.

Addressing concerns raised by fisherfolks, Hon. Emelia Arthur also spoke extensively on the management and distribution of premix fuel. She explained the legal provisions governing the composition of Premix Fuel Committee members, the approved selling price of premix fuel, and the requirement that 53 percent of proceeds generated must be used for community development projects.

The Minister further assured fisherfolks of government’s commitment to supporting the sector through the provision of fishing inputs, including outboard motors.

She explained that government intends to subsidize part of the cost, while beneficiaries would pay the remaining amount through installment arrangements.

She also highlighted plans by the Ministry to introduce pension and insurance schemes for fisherfolks to improve their welfare and long-term security.

Hon. Emelia Arthur additionally emphasized the importance of licensing all fishing canoes as part of efforts to improve regulation, accountability, and sustainability within Ghana’s fisheries sector.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s broader engagement with inland fishing communities across the country to gather firsthand information and develop practical interventions to support livelihoods, food security, and sustainable fisheries management.
