Gov’t schedules Thursdays for World Cup Fund pledges, assures accountability

by Business Post

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the mobilisation and management of funds to support the national senior football team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

It has also designated every Thursday as an official day for receiving pledges and updating the public.

At a brief ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance in Accra, the Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, disclosed that all contributions towards the World Cup campaign are paid directly into the official 2026 World Cup Fundraising Account at the Bank of Ghana, a move aimed at ensuring strict oversight and proper utilisation of funds.

According to the Deputy Minister, the centralised payment arrangement is designed to guarantee transparency and prevent leakages, while ensuring that every cedi mobilised is applied exclusively to the preparation of the Black Stars.

“All monies contributed are paid straight into the government’s World Cup Fundraising Account at the Bank of Ghana. This approach guarantees accountability and assures the public that the funds will be used solely for the team’s preparations,” Mr. Ampem stated.

The ceremony attracted strong participation from the corporate sector, underscoring growing private sector confidence in the government’s fundraising framework and Ghana’s World Cup ambitions.

Leading the contributions was KGL Group, which presented GH¢5 million, representing half of its GH¢10 million pledge. Serene Insurance followed with a GH¢2 million cash donation and an additional GH¢20 million insurance package to support the team’s participation and risk management.

Other notable contributors included Icon Energy and Jewel Energy, each donating GH¢1 million. Erata Motors contributed GH¢200,000, while fintech firm PayAngel donated GH¢100,000. A private businessman, Alex Okyere of KAF Company Limited, also made a personal contribution of GH¢240,000.

Commending the donors, Mr. Ampem described their support as a demonstration of patriotism and confidence in the national team, stressing that public-private collaboration was critical to Ghana’s World Cup success.

“We are deeply grateful for your show of love for the Black Stars. Although the first two friendly matches did not produce the desired outcomes, we remain confident that the team will rise to the occasion and make the nation proud,” he said.

He further reiterated government’s resolve to maintain public confidence by ensuring that all funds lodged at the central bank are used strictly for football-related preparations, including training, logistics, and player welfare.

The World Cup fundraising drive was launched last month by President John Dramani Mahama, with a target of US$30 million to adequately fund preparations for the global tournament.

To sustain momentum and encourage compliance with pledges, the Ministry of Finance has institutionalised weekly engagement sessions.

“Every Thursday, we will meet here to receive contributions. This will give those who have pledged but are yet to fulfil their commitments another opportunity to do so,” Mr. Ampem added, while encouraging more corporate bodies and individuals to support the national cause.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to promote transparency, national unity, and shared responsibility in Ghana’s sporting ambitions.
