by Business Post

China–Ghana trade reached a new record high of US$14.1 billion in 2025, representing a 19.3 percent year‑on‑year increase, officials disclosed at the Chinese Embassy’s Lantern Festival Gala in Accra on Sunday.

The milestone reaffirms China’s position as Ghana’s largest trading partner and underscores deepening economic cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Li Yang, Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, said the continued expansion of bilateral trade reflected growing confidence between the two countries and the positive impact of recent high‑level engagements.

He noted that President John Dramani Mahama’s meetings with Chinese leaders in 2025 had set a clear roadmap for strengthening cooperation, including the implementation of zero‑tariff treatment for African countries.

Mr. Li highlighted China’s broader economic progress, including sustained GDP growth and advancements in global governance initiatives.

He stated that Chinese enterprises operating in Ghana had expanded production lines, contributed significantly to industrial development, and deepened people‑to‑people exchanges through education, medical services and cultural programmes.

“China and Ghana have made important strides together. As we celebrate the Year of the Horse, we look forward to advancing cooperation in modernization, trade access and cultural exchange,” he said.

Representing the Government of Ghana, Mr. Brogya Genfi, Deputy Minister for Defence, commended the Chinese business community for its contribution to Ghana’s economic transformation.

He said investments in manufacturing, retail, hospitality and mining had created jobs and strengthened commercial ties.

He encouraged Chinese businesses to adhere to Ghanaian laws and regulatory frameworks, emphasizing that compliance was key to sustaining investment and mutual trust.

Mr. Genfi also highlighted ongoing defence cooperation, acknowledging China’s support for military training, scholarships, and infrastructure, including the construction of the National Defence College office complex.

“We deeply appreciate the support and presence of the Chinese community in Ghana. Together, let us build stronger partnerships anchored on respect and shared prosperity,” he said.

On behalf of the Chinese community, Mr. Tang Hong, President of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, attributed the record trade performance to the strong confidence Chinese investors continue to place in Ghana’s economy. He said Chinese enterprises remained key actors in the infrastructure, energy, technology, transportation and mining sectors, bringing innovation and employment.

Mr. Tang expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana and the Chinese Embassy for their cooperation, and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to responsible investment, cultural exchange and social welfare initiatives.

“Our investment stands as strong proof of confidence in Ghana’s future. We will continue to work hand in hand with our Ghanaian partners,” he said.

The Lantern Festival Gala was highlighted by performances from the visiting Anhui Performing Arts Group, symbolizing unity and cultural collaboration as both countries celebrate 66 years of diplomatic relations.
