Gov’t scales up solar, mini-grid projects to boost energy access

by Business Post

President John Dramani Mahama says government has intensified investment in renewable energy, with new solar, mini-grid and off-grid projects aimed at expanding access to reliable power.

Reporting to Parliament, the President said the Bui Power Authority had completed an additional 50MW solar plant, while distributed rooftop solar installations added 30MW to the national mix, bringing total installed solar capacity to 285MW.

He announced the construction of 35 mini-grids to serve 47 island and lakeside communities in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono East regions, as well as the distribution of 12,000 smart net meters from the first quarter of 2026.

A 200 MWp solar power project at the Dawa Industrial Zone is underway, with the first 100 MWp scheduled for completion by December 2026.

The African Development Bank, he added, had committed US$100 million to fund renewable-energy mini-grids for communities in the Afram Plains.

“These investments illustrate our determination to move Ghana towards a diversified and resilient clean energy future,” President Mahama stated.
