President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has resumed crude oil processing for the first time since 2018, following the completion of extensive turnaround maintenance.
Presenting the State of the Nation Address, the President said the refinery’s reactivation forms part of government’s broader efforts to restructure the petroleum downstream sector and increase Ghana’s refining capacity.
He said a strategic partnership involving the National Petroleum Authority, Ghana Gas and GCB Bank is being finalised to fully revitalise the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company, which will boost the supply of LPG cylinders and support domestic energy use.
The President reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving energy reliability, saying ongoing renegotiations with nine Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have resulted in US$250 million in immediate savings and US$1.1 billion in restructured debt.
“Our goal is to build a sustainable energy system anchored on transparency, efficiency and long-term stability,” he said.
